Ideal for discussing road safety in tutor time or at youth clubs, the DARE Game offers situation, setting and profile cards to enable thoughtful discussion.
We live in a world where using the roads are a must in order to live, work and play. Our roads can be congested and are used by a variety of vehicles, large and small. Though safety features are built into vehicles and highways infrastructure and there is legislation in place to keep us safe, accidents happen on a regular basis and although most are relatively minor, some can have catastrophic effects upon our lives. Road deaths and injuries are not inevitable and education can be the key to keeping safe. The last few decades have demonstrated that effective and comprehensive road safety strategies can reduce the number of people killed or injured on the road, despite increasing traffic levels.
Road Safety and Young People
We all become road users from an early age – we learn to cross roads as pedestrians and are passengers in vehicles way before we learn to ride a bike or a horse (in some cases) and to drive a car. Young people can often be risk takers for a variety of reasons – their age and stage of development means that they can be easily distracted, do not recognise danger and may be more likely to take risks.
Despite having some of the safest roads in the world, every year, thousands of children in the UK are killed or injured while travelling as pedestrians or cyclists.
How can Lifeskills courses help?
The Road Safety module in our DARE Game can be used by schools or community groups and teaches young people how to be more aware of the risks posed by using the road. Using discussion-based road safety resources, young people will follow our DARE DECISION MAKING MODEL in order to make safe and healthy decisions and to understand the law in relation to everyday road use. Urban and rural settings, different types of transport, being a pedestrian and understanding individual risk are all considered along with a range of options for making a responsible choice.
THINK! has become recognised internationally for its iconic and ground-breaking campaigns that have challenged dangerous behaviours on Britain’s roads.
